1. You can’t control everything — but you can control your effort
Luke shared that success in both sports and music comes down to the same simple principle: control what you can.
“You can’t control if you’re going to be a superstar, but you can control your work ethic, your diet, and your prep.”
Whether it’s athletes chasing a scholarship or artists chasing a dream, Luke says the controllables — preparation, discipline, and attitude — make all the difference.
2. Mentors and coaches matter
Growing up in South Georgia, Luke remembers the impact of tough but caring coaches who held him accountable. Years later, he still calls them when he needs advice.
“You always remember the coaches who believed in you. They taught me lessons that stuck long after the games.”
Luke even coached Pee-Wee football while in college, learning that the best mentorship comes from showing up and setting an example — lessons he applies now as a dad.
3. Sports teach mental toughness — and balance
From throwing a no-hitter in high school to completing a 100-mile cycling challenge, Luke says sports taught him to push through pain and doubt.
“The last 30 miles were all mental. Everything on me was hurting — but that’s when you find out what you’re made of.”
He also believes athletics play a key role in mental health for today’s youth:
“Nothing combats mental health struggles better than sports and the outdoors — the successes and the failures shape us.”
4. Family first — especially on Friday nights
Despite a demanding tour schedule, Luke makes time to be there for his sons’ games.
“The thing that brings me the most joy is Friday Night Lights — watching my boys play. Don’t miss those.”
Whether it’s golf, baseball, or football, Luke says his goal as a dad isn’t to push — it’s to guide: “It’s not about me. It’s about their wants, their wishes, their happiness.”
