Building Complete Football Athletes
At D1 Apex Academy, we go beyond drills—we build smarter, faster, and stronger athletes who excel in football and in life. Based out of D1 Training Des Moines in Waukee, Apex is led by former NFL and UNI standout Karter Schult and a staff of specialist coaches who know what it takes to play at the next level. Our mission is simple: give Iowa athletes a true development pathway from youth through high school and beyond.
What Apex Has to Offer:
- Position & Skill Development (Year-Round)
Master the details that separate average players to good players and good players from great players: route running, pass-rush technique, coverage technique, QB footwork, tackling fundamentals, and more. We work with athletes of all ages, skills, positions, and have elite coaches for each specific position. We offer athletes 1-on-1 or small group training, based on their needs/goals.
- Power, Speed, Strength & Movement Training
Integrated personalized performance work inside D1’s professional facility: acceleration, top-end speed, agility/change of direction, and power development. We help any athlete that has individual needs in their off-season to help them become the best version of themselves that they can be. All of our off-season work is centered around helping them get game-ready for the next level.
- Apex Air 7-on-7 Football
The state’s premier developmental 7v7 program for athletes ages 10 to 18. The main emphasis of the program is the developmental opportunities within the 35+ practices and scrimmages against ourselves/others. It is Apex Air's mission to prepare our athletes to dominate in their school season and compete at the next level. We are dedicated to providing a professional environment where athletes will have the opportunity to develop advanced techniques, skills and further test themselves in a competitive environment.
- Camps, Clinics & Classes
We host football classes, clinics, and camps year-round to provide the youth of Des Moines an opportunity to continue developing within the game of football and learn techniques, fundamentals, and skills from our elite coaching staff.
We host football camps for all positions during Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break, and during the summer. These are great introductory opportunity for athletes to learn the fundamentals of the game and grow their love of football.
We have seasonal class opportunities for our youth called "Apex Football Membership" that allows kids 8-14 the chance to extend football season. These classes focus on the basics of football skill and athletic development.
We host/run larger programs in the spring, such as our High School 7v7 League, our OL/DL Big Man Academy, and our Youth Indoor Flag Football League.
- We have recently partnered with Team Iowa Football to expand more youth football opportunities across the state.
- Integrated Recovery & Therapy Access
Through D1’s Recovery/Therapy program and partner resources, our athletes gain access to tools and treatments that keep them healthy, durable, and able to train consistently during in-season and off-season.
Why We Do It
Athletes that come to us have a dream to play football at the next level, yet most Iowa athletes don't get the chance. These athletes don’t lack the effort, determination, or talent to do so—they lack the knowledge, resources, or developmental model to achieve that dream.
Apex Academy was built to:
- Teach position-specific technique, skill, and fundamentals that win at the highest levels.
- Develop physical tools (speed, strength, explosiveness) in sync with skill to create next-level football players.
- Prepare athletes for college exposure and recruiting with honest/transparent feedback.
- Build character, values, and leadership that will lead to success in all aspects of life.
- Help athletes turn DREAMS into REALITY!
Why Apex is the Best Choice
Proven Leadership: Apex Academy is led by Karter Schult, a name that carries weight across Iowa football and beyond. Karter was a standout defensive lineman at the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned All-American honors and National Defensive Player of the Year recognition. After college, he went on to play professionally in the NFL (Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings), gaining firsthand experience with diverse systems/playbooks, training methods, and valuable firsthand experience that gives him a full-spectrum perspective as a director.
Expert Coaching Staff: Apex Academy coaches are highly qualified in their own right, coaching/playing at the highest levels (NFL, NCAA, HS), and bringing expert experience into the positional training, mental performance, and recruiting space.
Elite Facility: Multiple facilities within the DSM area that allow athletes to train year-round on football turf, acceleration/speed equipment, timing systems, and access to important recovery/therapy services.
Complete Developmental Pathway: Our aim is to provide as many services as we can that athletes of all backgrounds can trust year-round to help them accomplish their goals and turn their dreams into reality.
- Community Focus: Strong ties to Iowa collegiate football programs, local high/middle schools, and other organizations that give our athletes the best opportunities to showcase their talent.

Apex Air 7-on-7
Development First. Competition Always.
APEX AIR 7-on-7 is a developmental football program for athletes ages 10 to 18. The main emphasis of the program will be the developmental opportunities within the 35+ practices and scrimmages against ourselves/other programs.
We will also be fielding competitive teams to enter tournaments within the 10, 12, 14, 15 and 18u divisions. These rosters will be capped at 12 per team per tournament. Roster spots will be determined by merit through evaluation during practice performance and scrimmage performance. Multiple teams may be entered depending on program enrollment.
Beginning in February, Apex Air will practice 2 days during the week (Mon/Wed) and 1 practice every other Friday. We will continue practice through the end of April. All practices will be held at D1’s 13,000 sq ft indoor facility in Sportsplex West, Sportsplex Norwalk, Fareway Fields at Gregg Young Sports Campus, or MidAmerican RecPlex.
Apex Air isn’t just another 7-on-7 travel team. It’s Iowa’s premier football development program, designed to sharpen athletes’ skills, raise their football IQ, and prepare them for the next level. While many programs chase rosters and tournaments, Apex Air is built differently: every athlete trains, but only the most prepared and deserving compete.
What Makes Apex Air Different
Development First
Our practices mirror a true developmental high school/college prep environment. Athletes learn schematic recognition, universal schematic installation, situational football, and position-specific skills/technique. From route running, coverage recognition, defensive pursuit, man/zone coverage skills, and ball skills. Every rep is designed to make players sharper, smarter, technical, and more confident in their game.
Earned Competition
Tournament/scrimmage rosters aren’t just handed out—they’re earned. Athletes must show developmental skill growth, conceptual understanding, production accountability, competitive attitude, and effort to earn spots. This creates a culture where every practice matters and athletes understand what it means to truly compete the right way, as it will be on their high school teams and beyond.
Recruiting Preparation
Apex Air provides more than just reps. Athletes can get assistance with film review, recruiting education, and transparent/honest feedback that families can trust. This positions them to succeed at school practices, college camps, and showcases, while also giving them tools to stand out in the playing time or recruiting process.
Exposure Pathway
By competing against top talent in the region, Apex Air athletes gain the reps, experience, and visibility that directly translate to scholarship opportunities. We set out to bridge the gap between 7v7 to Friday nights and to college football—giving Iowa athletes an edge they can’t find anywhere else.
Success Stories
Apex Air alumni have already left their mark on the field and are excelling at the next level:
- Brayden Hoben—All-State at Grand View Christian, committed to South Dakota State.
- Cameron Meiners—Standout at Ankeny Centennial, multiple NCAA offers, uncommitted with gaining collegiate interest.
- Tate Platte—Apex Air Season 1 alum, 2-year starter at DMC, now at Drake University.

Dante Sciorrotta—Apex Air veteran, continuing his career at Morningside.
…and many more Apex athletes currently earning All-State honors, scholarship offers, and college opportunities.

“This program is a no brainer. If your son is serious about football and serious about off-season development, there’s no other place. In the last 2 years, my son has separated himself from his peers because of his work within this program.” – Chris Phelps (Parent of Jackson Phelps)
