About Gilbert, AZ

Gilbert is a town located southeast of Phoenix in Maricopa County, Arizona. Gilbert, which was settled in 1902 and incorporated in 1920, was once known as the Hay Shipping Capital of the World, although it has transitioned from a primarily agricultural area into a diverse suburban community.

As of July 2021, the population of Gilbert was 273,103, making it the largest incorporated town in the country. Gilbert has been one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States as well, considering its population was just 5,700 in 1980.
